Where Do Rude Bingo Calls Come From?

Before we look into why rude bingo calls are done, it’s good to first look into the origins of the original bingo lingo. Bingo calls have been around since the 1950s, back when a variant of bingo known as “housey-housey” was very popular among servicemen. These army fellows would amuse themselves by making jokes as they called out the numbers. 

In addition to being fun, these little jokes made it easy to tell which number was being called, even for those sitting at the back of the hall. It’s interesting to note how some of the regular bingo calls used to this day have their origins in military gags, rhymes, and slang. Take “21, royal salute,” which refers to the number of shots that make a royal salute or “31, get up and run,” which is part of a motivational rhyme. They also were, as they still are, an excellent way to break the ice, especially in a bingo hall where none or very few of the players know each other.
