Poker Face - Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga took advantage of the global poker boom and launched her career with her smash hit that draws comparisons between love and everyone's favorite card game well over a decade ago now all the way back in 2008. There are lots of poker-fueled phrases behind the infectious beat and sexual innuendo, such as "luck and intuition play the cards with spades to start" and "I want to hold em' like they do in Texas." If you're familiar with the song and Lady Gaga's career, you'll know that she ends up holding all the cards in her worldwide smash hit. And follow up songs by this artist also have a touch of high stakes to them; such as Love Game.

Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts - Bob Dylan

This Bob Dylan classic has a convoluted tale that focuses more on the preparation of a bank robbery, murder, and jealous lovers than the action on the felt, clocking in at nearly nine minutes of musical overture. In this fable, the jack of hearts is the leader of a gang of robbers, while Rosemary is "a queen without a crown" and Lily, at least metaphorically, is a princess. There is a reference to Lily playing poker in the cabaret, as well as other loose references to suits and playing cards such as the jack of hearts, kings, and a diamond mine throughout the song which just shows how inspiring the iconic game of poker can be.

Solitaire - The Carpenters

Solitaire is a hit single by the iconic duo The Carpenters about a man who "lost his love due to his disinterest." Not only does the world's loneliest card game serve as a perfect model for dealing with broken romances, but it's also mentioned several times in this 1970s folk classic. Lines like "kept to himself he plays the game, without her affection it always ends the same" and "while life goes on around him everywhere, he's playing solitaire" don't require careful listening to pick up on. Although the Carpenters' version is the most well-known, an Andy Williams version of this hit, which was co-written by Phil Cody and Neil Sedaka, is also available.

Queen of Hearts - Juice Newton

This card-themed song dominated foreign airwaves in the early 1980s, despite peaking at number two on the American pop and country charts; making it more of an obscure gambling song you might not have heard before. The Juice Newton version of this Hank DeVito classic is better recognised outside of the UK than the Dave Edmunds version, which was recorded two years earlier. The vocalist wears her emotions on her sleeve in the song's lyrics, "playing with the queen of hearts, knowing it ain't really wise." "The joker ain't the only fool who'll do anything for you," she continues. She clearly can't help herself, despite the fact that she will be harmed repeatedly. The video includes a lot of shuffling cards, as you might anticipate.

The Gambler - Kenny Rogers

The Gambler can be enjoyed by anyone whether you love country music or know little to nothing about the genre. Don Schlitz wrote this Kenny Rogers classic about a chance encounter between the singer and a gambler on a train to nowhere. The song's lead singer provides a lot of advice for card players. Whether you're playing cards or just living your life, the catchy lyric "you've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run" rings true. In any case, adding this tune to your playlist is a no-brainer.

Losing Hand - Ray Charles

In this R&B hit composed by Charles E. Calhoun, Ray Charles isn't singing about a bad night at the tables. Losing Hand, like many other songs about gambling, is about placing bets on love and losing big. The line "I gambled on your love darling and got a losing hand" starts and closes the song, but what happens in the middle is perhaps more intriguing. We learn that the object of his devotion has been cheating on him, yet he still loves you. Of course, additional card analogies abound, such as "I imagined I'd be your king baby, yes, and you might be my queen."

Gambler - Madonna

"Gambler" is a song by American singer Madonna from the 1985 film Vision Quest's soundtrack album. "Gambler" is a musically lively synth-pop and disco song with instrumentation such as drums, electronic handclaps, and percussion, as well as a bass synth and keyboards. Madonna asserts her freedom in the song's lyrics. Madonna only performed the song once, on her 1985 The Virgin Tour, which was caught on the live video album Madonna Live: The Virgin Tour, like a once-in-a-lifetime gambling victory.
